Bourgie Hall welcomes for the first time Québec-based multi-instrumentalist and composer Cédric Dind-Lavoie. For this edition of Nuit blanche à Montréal, he presents the musical project Archives, a performance that brings together folklore archives with ambient and introspective music.
For this occasion, the musician reclaims old treasures uncovered through passionate research: a selection of songs and instrumental tunes from the 1940s and 1950s, drawn in particular from the collections of folklorists Simonne Voyer, Roger Matton, and Luc Lacourcière. He accompanies them primarily on piano, enriching them with a modern and intimate musical setting. On stage, he is also supported by a fiddler who provides a strong grounding in traditional musical codes.
Together, they ultimately form a trio with the archive station, which plays these relics of the past in real time, sometimes directly from reel-to-reel tape or vinyl, thus echoing the original recording methods. This scenic addition allows the listener to enter more deeply into communion with these tradition bearers, all magnified by the sensitive work of scenographer Karine Gauthier.
The result is a highly poetic performance that, rather than falling into a simple nostalgic exercise, reveals these archives in a new light, as if the two musicians had been able to slip through the cracks of time to meet these voices and their stories, and to accompany them.
