Shtetl in the Sun

March 1, 8:00 pm - March 2, 1:00 am
Museum of Jewish Montreal
Museum of Jewish Montreal

The Museum of Jewish Montreal is delighted to bring together the work of American photographer Andy Sweet (1953-1982) and Toronto ceramist Jonah Strub (b. 1996) in our winter exhibition “Shtetl in the Sun”.

This exhibition celebrates the colourful nostalgia surrounding the phenomenon of elderly Jewish communities that migrated to Southern Florida in the second half of the twentieth century. Reflecting pop, camp and kitsch aesthetics, Sweet and Strub's work, while crossing generations and mediums, highlights the humour and beauty of those who spend their time under the sun during the winter months.

Juno-nominated musician Socalled will be spinning Miami-inspired vinyl, reflecting the exhibition's vibrant ambience. Join us at our location in the heart of Mile End to escape the cold and get a glimpse of sunnier weather.

A suggested donation between $5 to $10 is requested during the DJ set, which will take place from 9pm to 12:30am.

Our bar will be open (card only) with alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverage options.

Andy Sweet's photographs are on loan from the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU.
